Our food and wine tour in search of the truly authentic and genuine flavors of Sicily took us to the center of Sicily in Poggioreale, precisely in the "Mandra di mezzo" district from which the historic dairy of the same name takes its name. It is a family-run artisanal dairy that has been handed down for generations. They have their own herd of only Valle del Belice sheep, fed on pasture in the adjacent hills and use only their milk to create a one-of-a-kind cheese. The real Sicilian pecorino and the famous Vastedda della Valle del Belice, produced with freshly milked raw (i.e. unpasteurised) milk, respecting the ancient tradition that characterizes the cheeses of this dairy. It is a little-known product on the market but which is unrivaled in terms of quality and authenticity.
