Martorana Fruit: Sicilian Confectionery Excellence Origins and Tradition
In fact, these are typical sweets from Palermo made with another must-have ingredient in our tradition: almond paste (or marzipan)!
Frutta Martorana, also known as almond paste, is a typical sweet from Palermo with a fascinating history. The name comes from Eloisa Martorana, a noblewoman who founded the monastery adjacent to the Martorana Church in Palermo, where the nuns prepared these sweets.
Despite the name, these are not real fruit, but delicious sweets shaped like fruit and vegetables, made with almond paste (or marzipan), sugar and food colouring. Traditionally, they are eaten during the Day of the Dead (November 2) .
Our Artisan Selection We only chose the best Martorana Fruit from the province of Palermo , produced by master craftsmen who respect the traditional recipe without exaggerating with sugar, almond essence or flour.
Many pastry shops, even renowned ones, tend to create desserts that are too sweet, floury or excessively aromatic. Our selection, on the other hand, guarantees a balanced taste and a perfect consistency , keeping the Sicilian authenticity intact.
