Here is the original pure Sicilian rock salt

We at Sicilian Food Shop offer you this type of mineral salt because, compared to sea salt and Himalayan pink salt, it has a significantly higher purity.

Simply because these rock salt crystals were formed millions of years ago and do not contain any impurities, appearing a pure white color.

A short history

Halite or halite, also called rock salt (a name composed of salt and gem, due to its crystalline appearance), is a mineral formed by sodium chloride, which belongs to the halite group.

Origin and location

It is found mainly in the form of extensive banks formed by the evaporation of masses of salt water (ancient salt lakes or seas); these banks are found included in rocks of all geological ages and their thickness can vary from a few tens of centimeters to several hundreds of meters.
Often the rocks that enclose it are clayey, but compact, and therefore practically impermeable to water: this allows the conservation of the mineral, otherwise diluted by underground waters. In these deposits it commonly occurs associated with gypsum, kainite, carnallite, sylvite, anhydrite, polyhalite and kieserite.
Less important are the superficial and intermediate deposits, formed by evaporation of recent salt lakes, where halite often forms a compact crust that covers the brackish waters.
It is also observed, in small quantities, as a product of volcanic activity.

Location of discovery

Several mines are active in Sicily: in beautiful colorless crystals within compact white masses in Bosco Stincone, in the municipality of San Cataldo, in the province of Caltanissetta; together with bischofite and carnallite in the Pasquasia mine in the municipality of Enna. In the municipality of Lercara Friddi there is the Coffara Muti mine of halite only. In Petralia there is a mine of particular purity. Finally, it is also found in very small colorless cubes in the dry fumaroles of Vesuvius.
