Shortbread Cookies with Sugar Icing
Monreale are biscuits originating from the city of the same name in Palermo.
Typically overcooked, they are S-shaped and decorated with delightful swirls of sugar icing.
It is said that their history has its roots in the sixteenth century when, for the first time, the Benedictine nuns of the ancient Monastery of San Castrense prepared them to offer them to travellers who knocked on the doors of the Monastery in search of refreshment.
